In early 2025, I created a series of illustrations and animations for a game called Halfway to Nowhere. The truth is, however, Halfway to Nowhere is not a real game. All assets were hand-drawn in Procreate, and the video was animated in After Effects. My goal in creating Halfway to Nowhere was to explore individual abstract concepts through the lens of “what if this were a playable game?” I intended each screenshot to look consistent with the others while ensuring each part of the project looks like it was taken from a different moment in the game. In exploring these ideas as video game screenshots, I had to consider UI/UX elements and standard RPG style conventions to make it look more believable that this game could exist. Initially, I had no consistent storyline for these screenshots, and intentionally made the visuals vague and absurd to create dream-like scenarios. In mid 2025, popular YouTuber Super Eyepatch Wolf reached out to me and told me about an upcoming project- a collector's book featuring fake video games made by artists online- and asked if Halfway to Nowhere could be included. The editor for the book came up with their own story out of the pieces I provided and included a summary in the book. While I initially planned for it to be left mysterious and vague, I enjoyed being a part of a collaborative project like this. The Bizarre World of Fake Video Games has since been published by Hollow Press in late 2025.
